Be joyful always; pray continually. 1 thessalonians 5: 16-17
“Be joyful always”—that’s a hard concept to embrace in today’s world. With so many negative things happening around us daily, it’s understandable why joy can feel out of reach. We’re juggling demanding jobs while trying to find a healthy work-life balance. Our families face daily struggles—be it financial challenges, the pressures of life changes, or the complexities of raising small kids and teenagers in an overwhelming digital world. And let’s not forget the news, constantly bombarding us with worldly conflicts and distressing updates. It’s no wonder that so many people find it difficult to be “joyful always.”
But here’s the thing: In the midst of every storm, there is always a glimmer of light. I was reminded of this truth recently while listening to a podcast during one of those challenging days when I felt overwhelmed. It struck me that when God closes a door, it’s for a reason—usually for growth. He places obstacles in our paths to draw us closer to Him and encourage us to rely on His guidance. I didn’t always view life’s difficulties this way. For much of my younger years, I made decisions that led to chaos and pain. But as I’ve grown, my heart has shifted. I no longer want chaos or pain, though I still encounter both. Instead, I’ve learned to stop, pray, and wait—for God’s guidance.
I can say from experience that, when I chose to “be still” and trust in God’s plan, I was led in directions I would never have chosen for myself. Every time I wanted to take control and change things back, I felt the urge to simply stay still and let Him lead. Through this process, I’ve witnessed incredible growth in my children, and I’ve seen myself learning to let go of control and place my trust in God’s hands.
This is my prayer for everyone I know who’s facing a struggle: Instead of rushing to fix everything all at once or acting out of fear, slow down. Pray big prayers, and wait. God’s timing is perfect.
“Pray continually,” whether things are good or bad, and you will find joy. You’ll find peace. And most of the time, you’ll find clarity.
